“Demurrage and detention are very common terms in the field of transportation and logistics, especially in the context of container shipping. Both terms are associated with the prolonged use of containers, but they occur at different times:
Demurrage:
In import processes, it refers to the period of time spent beyond the planned stay or agreed in a contract with the shipowner (example: 15 days after unloading the ship), and may be passed on by the latter to the freight contractor, due to the extra time the container is used after its arrival or even, as provided for in some contracts, for the time a ship needs to be on standby to unload the vessel.
Detention:
In export processes, this refers to the period of time spent beyond the planned stay or agreed in a contract with the shipowner (example: 7 days before boarding the ship), and may be passed on by the shipowner to the freight contractor, due to the extra time the container is used before loading or even, as provided for in some contracts, the time a ship needs to be on standby for the vessel to be loaded.
Now, do you know which D&D combination many shipowners use.
